The world is the planet Earth and all life upon it, including human civilization. "End of the world" scenarios refer to the end of human history, often in religious contexts.

The world's a theatre, the earth a stage,
Which God and nature do with actors fill.

Journalism
Only a newspaper! Quick read, quick lost,
Who sums the treasure that it carries hence?
Torn, trampled under feet, who counts thy cost,
Star-eyed intelligence?
Mary Clemmer, The Journalist, Stanza 9.
